Facilities Manager for Goroka General Hospital MR Timothy Kairi travelled to the United States last month to pay a factory visit and do hands training on a Medical Oxygen Generating Plant which the Hospital has purchased in collaboration with National Department of Health .
Goroka General Hospital is the first Hospital in the country which has gone ahead and is setting up the Medical Oxygen Generating Plant. Premier Bio – a Medical Engineering Company is the local agent in Papua New Guinea which will do the installation on behalf of the Air SEP Corporation of Buffalo in the United States.
Currently BOC is the only supplier of all Medical Oxygen and other medical gases in the country . Goroka General Hospital uses a tremendous amount of Medical Oxygen for the benefit of the patients every day. When there are natural disasters and/or landslides this can potentially cut off the highway from Lae for more than a week. In addition to the highway access, there is frequently a shortage of Oxygen supply which can impact this Hospital as well as other Hospitals in the Highlands Region.
The Hospital is expecting that the issue of much needed Medical Oxygen supply will now be resolved with the installation of this new Oxygen Generation plant.
Thank you,
Timothy Kairi
Facilities Manager

The late Dr. Peter Are was originally from Gumine District of the Chimbu Province. He is one of the few consultant dentists in Papua New Guinea. After, completing his residency at Arawa General Hospital he moved to Mt Hagen General Hospital. He fell in love with the place & decided to make home there. For the last 26 years he has built one of the well established dental units in the country at Mt Hagen General Hospital, until his death on the 3rd of November 2008. He went abroad to Australia for 2 years and has achieved a Masters Degree in Dental Public Health and then returned to Mt Hagen. Apart from that one of his outstanding achievements was the establishment of the National Doctors’ Association (NDA) with other senior colleagues. Papua New Guinean doctors are some of the smartest and hardest working doctors in the world but the least paid. With the efforts of the NDA, the government is eventually recognising their services.
Dr. Are has put in so much energy, time and in fact his entire life to fight for the rights of the country’s doctors and his immediate community, enduring all his private hardships in silence, masked by his everlasting smiling face. In the end he lost his wife, his house, his family, his rights and the allowances he fought for and ultimately his own life. He has died of myocardial infarct (heart attack), while discussing NDA matters, with his colleagues. Dr. Are is a true Papua New Guinean who gave up himself for the betterment of this country. Rest in peace Dr. Are and we salute you for your outstanding efforts and achievements.

A Very well organised website. I thought at Divine Word University in Madang we were the best, however you have made it.
I should firstly commend your IT man, Mr. Schilt who has done much to expose Goroka Base Hospital at a Global arena.
Furthermore, with the CEO who has the insight and vision to progress, I trust more and better things should eventuate like this.
Congratulations Dr. Apa and your executives.
Finally, we would love to see and read more from your websites.
Staff and everybody should be encouraged to utilise it.
Thank you
